Viscum album L. polysaccharides used to change the sensitivity of mice to gamma irradiation (Russisch, engl. Abstract) |
Journal/Book: Radiobiologiia 32 (6), 868-872. 1992;
Abstract: The influence of water-soluble polysaccharides of Viscum album L. on thesurvival of mice subjected to whole-body gamma-irradiation has beeninvestigated. Polysaccharides were shown to exert a radioprotectiveeffect which was a function of both the radiation dose and the drug doseand time of its injection. The maximum radioprotective efficacy ofpolysaccharides was observed after their injection 15 min beforeirradiation. A single intraperitoneal administration of polysaccharides(25 mg/kg) before irradiation with LD50/30 and LD100/10-12 increased the60-day survival rate up to 95% and 27% respectively. The postirradiationinjection of polysaccharides prevented death of 80% of mice given LD50and increased the average life expectancy of animals irradiated withabsolutely lethal doses. Author.
