Abstract: An allergy has something to do with the building up of barriers - we allow much too easy access to so many extrinsic things and then compensate by overreacting to them. An allergy draws a distinction between the extrinsic and the intrinsic, between the self and the not-self. A study of the causes and consequences of allergies involves many different aspects - anatomy, cytology, biochemistry, physiology, psychoneuroimmunology, depth psychology and the theory of knowledge. There are many indications that we are experiencing increasing difficulties with building up our barriers against excessive external stimulation, environmental pollution, stress, etc., and people in our materialistic age are becoming less and less aware of their real self, which is something over and above the material and which should control the physical. Are these parallele merely a coincidence - or is there a scientific basis for assuming some connection between them?
