Studies with acupuncture using a SQUID bio-magnetometer: a preliminary report

Abstract: A SQUID bio-magnetometer was constructed at the Physics Department, Southampton University. Two experiments were carried out in order to detect changes in magnetic fields over acupuncture points and painful areas, using acupuncture.The first experiment looked at Back Shu points, stimulating non dermatomally related sham points and then real associated points at the tips of the fingers or the tips of the toes, the magnetometer head being placed over the appropriate Back Shu point.Seven cases were studied, positive results were found in four cases, equivocal results in one case, and no result in two.In the second experiment, ten patients were studied, before and after acupuncture. A significant change in magnetic field was noted, post acupuncture, in eight out of the ten cases.
