What do we know about Metabolism and pharmacokinetics of the constituents of garlic?

Abstract: Characterization of a drug besides others includes the investigation of biotransformation and the pharmacokinetics of the active ingredients. These investigation should be performed in animals and subsequently in humans. In this respect phytomedicines are to be treated in the same manner as synthetic drugs. The knowledge of the metabolic process in the organism of the active ingredients is prerequisite for finding the effective dosage and thereby for the correct use of the drug. This review tries to make an inventory of the wide spread reports in scientific literature on metabolism and pharmacokinetics of the potential active compounds of garlic (Allium sativum L.).
