The Use of Sea Water Buoyancy Therapy in the Treatment of Muscle Diseases

Journal/Book: Natur- und Ganzheitsmedizin Wissenschaft und Praxis. 1992; 5/6: 158-168.

Abstract: In the treatment of orthopedic and neurological diseases good results could be achieved with sea water buoyancy therapy. Warm sea water with a mineral content of 0.9% allows four important therapeutical functions: the body immerged into the water becomes virtually weightless, the surrounding pressure does not cause any tensions of the muscles, the composition of the water resembles the extracellular liquid, and it hardly causes any intolerance to these baths. In the bath, the incoming water at different levels causes many sorts of water movement. Various observations in nature have shown that growth takes place mainly in stirred water, rich in oxygen. The water movement subjects the patient to manifold kinesthetic and tactile stimuli which support a development of mobility and which help to diminish disturbances in sensitivity. This is shown with several example cases.
