Beeinflussung atherogener Risikofaktoren und der Arteriosklerose durch chronisch intermittierende Elektromyostimulation beim Menschen

Author(s): Rühlmann, C., Kriesel, K.

Abstract: 20 patients with therapy-resistant hyperlipidemian and angiographically identified arteriosclerosis in the pelvis and thigh area underwent a daily four hour electromyostimulation of Mm. quadriceps femores for 1 year. The applied stimulating devices "jogger" (Starkstromanlagenbau Leipzig/Halle) produced well-tolerable isometric muscle contractions under bipolar transcutaneous application of 7 *s direct current impulses in the form of impulse groups lasting 700 *s and a frequency of 2 s- 1. In contrast to the control group treated with drugs (n = 22), significant increases of lipolytic activities, HDL-cholesterol concentrations and decreases of serum triglycerides could be proved in the test group. Temporary increases of erythrocyte cholesterol/phospholipid relations led to an increased erythrocyte rigidity within the first 6 months of treatment. In total, however, the rheological test profile of the blood improved by the decrease of erythrocyte aggregation and elimination of polyglobulia. Regression of arteriosclerotic findings, even outside the stimulating location, could be observed in arteriosclerosis of light and medium degree (n = 8). Of 12 patients affected with arteriosclerotic changes of a high degree 6 showed an improved collateral formation and 6 constant findings. In contrast, progressive arteriosclerotic findings could be proved in the control group in n = 13 and there was a constancy in n = 9. The favourable systemic impact on atherogenous risk factors by electromyostimulation united the metabolicrheological effects of physical stamina conditioning, of isovolemic hemo-dilution and physiotherapeutic interval training. The deterioration of the antioxidative status under ordered antiatherogenous diets as a consequence of selenium and vitamin E deficiency in human food requires their nutritive substitution.
