Abstract: 228 patients were followed up using questionnaires not earlier than one year after attending our back school and were compared to 109 controls (hospital treatment without back school). Furthermore a clinical examination and a functional test of lumbar spine were performed in 54 back school and 48 control patients. After back school the following results were registered: less hospital treatments, reduction of drug therapy, increased sporting activity. Physician's consultations, duration of individual physical treatment, disability and professional change were reduced in back school patients after therapy on an outpatient basis. No improvement was observed in the activity of a daily gymnastic program at home or in ergometric adaptation in the workplace. Clinical examination and functional tests revealed no difference. Spontaneous regression of low back pain and different clinical signs render conclusions more difficult. Usually expectations in a back school success are too enthusiastic.
