The Indian incense - new aspects of an old resin |
Abstract: The incense resin or olibanum was on of the most luxurious treasures of the ancient times. Today its medicinal effects gain increasingly attention. Of all the various medicinal applications in the past the analgesic, sedative, antiarthritic and antirheumatic effects have been confirmed by modern medicine. The pharmacologically most important constituents are derivatives of boswellic acid. These compounds are contained in the resins of the Indian species Boswellia serrata (z.B. glabra), the Somalian B. cartceri and B. papyrifera and the Arabian B. sacra.
