The reaction of parameters of strength during the course of regeneration of an atrophy of the femoral musculature performing physiotherapy |

Abstract: Comparing both sides maximum potentials of innervation of the m. quadriceps femoris and the strength of extension of the knee joint were measured an patients with a postoperative atrophy of the thigh musculature after injuries and diseases of the knee. During the six weeks course of treatment the alteration of these parameters and the differences of circumference an the thigh were studied, and it was analysed the mutual dependence of these control parameters with multiple regressions. The results show significant correlations between each of the parameters. There was a very close connection between strength and innervation an both the healthy and the diseased extremity during the entire course of therapy and observation.Due to the results it is concluded that an atrophy of the m. quadriceps femoris without any neurophysiological defects, but mainly caused by immobilization, is well represented by the following parameters: differences of circumferenee, differences of potentials of innervation, and differences of the strength of extension. That appears also to be true for a six weeks course of regeneration performing physiotherapy. Partly varying results in the relevant literature and their probable reasons - different starting conditions and aims - are discussed.
