Abstract: Objective: This study is meant of obtain knowledge for everyday practice concerning the behaviour of selected functional systems (thermoregulation, hemorrheology, myomechano- and electromyographic parameters) in para- and tetraplegic after sauna and to make recommendations for practical realization in this group patients.Subjects: A total of 19 paraplegic patients and 22 control persons were examined. Sauna conditions were standardized. The effects an the above-mentioned functional systems were recorded. Both groups were exposed to sauna conditions for 15 minutes. The temperature was 85 °C, relative humidity 5 to 10 % (multipersonal sauna). Results: Concerning muscle temperature, there were to differences between patients with different levels of paresis. Increases in skin temperature were significantly more obvious than in control persons, reaching values up to 43 °C. Consequences in the hemorrheologic situation may even be referred to as latent dysfunction. Paraplegics differ according to their levels of paresis. Low paraplegia produces hemoconcentration and increased blood viscosity. After sauna, the basic electric muscle activity is also significantly increased in paraplegics. Conclusions: Taking into consideration our results as well as the aspects of the basic disease mentioned, the supportive treatment of paraplegics in sauna is without problems and well dosed.
