An investigation of GPs' attitudes to and knowledge of osteopathy |
Author(s):
Abstract: A questionnaire aimed at identifying GPs' attitudes to, and knowledge of, osteopathy, was sent to all the GPs identifiable in the Huntingdon Health Authority area. Results of the survey revealed that 58% of the responding GPs claimed to be clear about the difference between physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathy. 50% of the GPs were not clear about the difference between osteopathy and manipulation. When referring patients to an osteopath, 58 % of GPs did not make a specific recommendation 75% of the time. Most of the GPs responding to this survey thought that osteopathy was useful in the treatment of mechanical and degenerative musculoskeletal problems, particularly lumbar and spinal complaints.
