Abstract: The long-lasting effect of oxygen multistip therapy (OMT) has been detected by changes of several physiological parameters. However, the phenomenon as such seemed not to be explainable. In 1982, M. von Ardenne proposed a cellular switching mechanism of the vascular wall. This hypothesis is more detailed here an the Basis of reversible swelling of the endothelial cells and substantiated by experimental results obtained by us and other authors. It is pointed out that further mechanisms might also play a role; expecially the endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) and nitric oxide (NO) are considered in this respect.
