The Initiative Must Come from the Doctor

Abstract: Knowledge is a precondition to adequate health behaviour Today many occupational fields participate in spreading such knowledge. Several surveys have shown, however, that it is still the doctor who plays the most important role in health education.A study, carried through in four different doctor's practices, tested in which way the doctor leads health education. The questions included: which social features of the patients influence the consultation, how often and how long the consultations take place, and to which topics they relate. Altogether a third of the treatments included health consultations. The initiative mostly came from the doctor. Social features of the patients played a minor role only. The study supports the hypothesis that the type and intensity of health consultation are determined by the doctor.
