Abstract: After a brief description of the rules that must be adhered to for as exact a determination of the resting pulse as possible, the possibility of assessing the physical fitness from the dependency of the pulse rate on workload as well as from the resting pulse rate is described. Further, the assessment of the effects and the time course of distress from the resting pulse is discussed. For example, the time course of recovery after illness can be detected and determined in the simplest possible manner. lt is of great practical interest that the need for repeating the oxygen multistep therapy can be derived from taking a pulse at rest. Even the necessity to take a vacation can be recognized in this way. Of high diagnostic value is the determination of the energy status. This can be done with sufficient exactness and safety by assessing the physical working capacity (PWC)-derived energy status. As defined by Hollmann's rule, the pulse rate is to be limited to famax = 180 minus age (min-1) during the test. lt is exemplified how the PWC energy status can be derived from the resting pulse rate and the pulse changes under load. Because of its feasibility and relevance, the determination and evaluation of the resting pulse rate as well as the relative PWC energy status should belong soon to the routine measures in medical practice, in fitness centers, and in medical self-control at home, preferably in old age.
