Abstract: The development of the School of Phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine) has to be seen against the background of the history of herbal Medicine. The origins of herbal Medicine are lost in the mists of antiquity. This modern day and age requires a different outlook on medicine than the mediaeval approach.Since the 1940s an ever increasing stream of research papers on the constituents, their efficacy and action of medicinal plants is being published, and the task of the School is seen in integrating this new scientific knowledge in the existing pool of anecdotal, empirical knowledge.
