Abstract: In previous studies we reported the possibility of partially counteracting the lethal effect of cadmium in Bufo arenarum embryos by means of Potentized Microdoses (PM) of this heavy metal under simultaneous as well as pretreatment conditions. In the present study we report that the PM effect against cadmium lethality can be obtained almost instanta- neously after contact of the embryos with the PM solution. To this end we employed a PM solution of 10-18 mg Cd2+/L obtained by serial dilution and vigorous shaking by vortexing for one minute. The experiments involved 4 groups of 25 embryos in duplicate. The experimental groups A and B were kept for one minute in the PM solution and then A was kept in 1 mg Cd2+/L and B in Holffreter solution. C was kept in 1 mg Cd2+/L and D was the control in Holffreter solution. Embryo survival after 24 hours expressed in percentages was A: 64, B: 100, C: 7 and D: 100. These results show that the lethal effect of cadmium was significantly reduced (P < 0.001) by the PM solution. The beneficial effect obtained does not seem to require pretreatment since the duration of PM exposure was so short, We sugges t that these effects can only be explained by transfer of information in the form of energy.
