Review of the Journal of British Music Therapy: 1987-1991

Abstract: As part of a masters degree in creative music therapy the author reviews the literature produced in the British Journal of Music Therapy between the years 1987 and 1991. There are five categories of papers: case studies, opinion/ position papers, research articles, music therapy methods and those of general interest. The conclusion is that although established work is well represented, new avenues of music therapy are not reported; e.g. work with offenders, child abuse, "non-impaired" adults and cooperation with other art therapists. This work was produced as one element of the masters course for music therapists already in practice who wish to further or broaden their training. The course offers supervision in the country of origin of the music therapist (in this case England), and academic supervision in Germany. The course offers a University degree recognised in Germany as a qualification to practice music therapy. This course is being adapted to meet provide the preliminary bases for a research training, in that students completing the course will know how to search and review literature, create hypotheses and relate their clinical work to a corpus of theoretical knowledge
