Abstract: In recent years music therapy has--apart from its well-established areas of application--played an increasingly important role in work with the disabled. This method is part of a general concept of music therapy that calls for use of a "prenatal therapy room" specially developed for the severely and multiply disabled. The therapy includes practices that approximate prenatal experiences and molding, and the provision of a so-called social uterus. In addition to acoustic perception, other forms of perception--vestibular, sensory, and vibratory--play an important role in this environment. The prenatal room offers a fear-free and secure atmosphere in which the patient is motivated to activity by means of sensuous stimulation. (author
