Abstract: Elsa Vink describes how falling in love with the musictherapist can be the result of a mixture of transference and childhood longings. These mechanisms are both mobilised by the extreme proximity achieved when, whilst playing together with the client, the therapist musically expresses acceptance of the client and a sense of "melting together" is evoked. Erotic and symbiotic needs then manifest themselves as idealisation of, or falling in love with the therapist. This process can be beneficial to the client if he succesfully transfers the feeling of being accepted by the other to one of being accepted by himself.
