Chronic pain: Three issues in treatment and implications for music therapy

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1991; 9: 91-97.

Abstract: Describes chronic pain and examines 3 issues relevant to its treatment: cognitive influences, affective expression, and the acquisition of self-regulation skills. The application of music therapy to address these areas with other populations is discussed, and a rationale is given for the use of the cognitive-behavioral treatment model for chronic pain. The general goal of this model is a reconceptualization of the pain so that the S believes he or she controls it. A multidimensional approach using music therapy to focus on the roles of the cognitive and affective domains and in combination with self-regulation techniques is proposed. ABSTRACT 2: This paper describes chronic pain and examines three issues relevant to its treatment: cognitive influences, affective restriction, and the acquisition of self-regulation skills. The application of music therapy to address these three areas with other populations is discussed, and a rationale is given for the use of the cognitive-behavioral treatment model for chronic pain. The purposes of this paper are to describe a disorder unknown to many music therapists and to stimulate thought and research for the use of music therapy with this population.
