Art therapy on a residential treatment team for troubled children |
Journal/Book: Journal of Child and Youth Care. 1991; 6: 49-59.
Abstract: ( This reprinted article originally appeared in The Journal of Child Care, 1985, Vol 2(4), 61-71. The following abstract of the original article appeared in PA, Vol 73:30521. ) Describes some of the ways an emotionally disturbed child can benefit from art therapy and provides case examples from the art work of 6 preadolescent children. These examples illustrate the use of art therapy in facilitating full emotional expression without fear, ventilation and containment, concreteness, nonverbal communication, and expressions of wishful thinking. It is concluded that a constant interchange between the art therapist and the child care worker can provide a way of coping with frustratingly incomprehensible behavior by understanding what lies behind it.
