Using music therapy to enhance the quality of life in a client with Alzheimer's dementia: A case study

Abstract: Presents an overview of the characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its effects on older Americans and the use of music therapy as a treatment intervention for patients with AD. A case study of a 69-yr-old female nursing home patient with AD is presented to illustrate the dynamics of music therapy intervention with an individual who has severe impairments and to indicate how goals, objectives, and treatment strategies are developed. The relationship between music therapy and quality of life issues for the elderly who have severe impairments and are institutionalized is considered.
