The effects of music and relaxation on third trimester anxiety in adolescent pregnancy

Abstract: Examined the effects of a music and relaxation intervention on anxiety levels within a population of pregnant adolescents. 19 13-18 yr old girls provided data for the experimental group (those Ss receiving the music therapy intervention); 20 matched girls provided data for the control group (those Ss not receiving the music therapy intervention). All Ss were administered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory at regular intervals from the 7th-9th mo of pregnancy. Analysis revealed a significant main effect difference between the 2 groups on the trait anxiety scores and a significant main effect difference between the groups with regard to state anxiety. ABSTRACT 2: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of music and relaxation intervention on anxiety levels within a population of pregnant adolescents. Nineteen girls provided data for the experimental group, while twenty girls provided data for the control group. All subjects were administered Spielberger's Trait Anxiety Inventory at the beginning of the seventh, eighth, and nineth months of pregnancy. All subjects were administered the Spielberger's State Anxiety Inventory beginning at approximately the 28th week and extending though the 37th week. The statistical design employed in the study was a repeated measures factorial design comparing the trait and state anxiety scores between the experimental group and the control group. The repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant main effect difference between the two groups on the trait anxiety scores. Furthermore, the repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistcially significant main effect difference between the groups with regard to state anxiety.
