Family art therapy within a deaf system. Special Issue: The creative arts therapies and the family |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1991; 18: 251-261.
Abstract: Investigates 3 areas of concern relevant to understanding family dynamics within the deaf population: language systems, the mourning process, and the role of an interpreter. The family art therapy process is highlighted through the case of an individual who was in long-term individual art therapy for 3 yrs and who had been diagnosed as deaf at age 3 and a half yrs. Family art therapy sessions, interspersed throughout his treatment, helped him to communicate with his family and expedited discharge from his residential placement.
