A method for conducting improvised musical play with children both with and without developmental delay in preschool classrooms

Abstract: An analysis of the methodological steps involved in conducting improvised musical play (IMP), a strategy for fostering social play among children both with and without developmental delays, including a detailed description of steps involved in implementing IMP activities with young children in mainstreamed settings is provided. Specific components of the method for conducting IMP episodes that are discussed use music: to gain attention, to create an expectancy of interaction in children, and to establish a play dialogue. Musical and lyrical techniques for responding to changes in the children's play behavior in a back-and-forth conversational manner are presented and illustrated with examples from IMP episodes. Expressive devices for sustaining and prolonging children's participation, for encouraging elaboration, and for concluding the play are also considered.
