Abstract: Suggests that facilitating communication among family members seems to be the most common use of music in family treatment. Examples of the use of music in family therapy are given in cases of terminal illness and cancer, pediatric trauma, adult and adolescent psychiatry, autism, mental retardation, and speech and special needs. The examples cited depict the early uses of music and family therapy from the informal consultation of the parents by the therapist to the active involvement of parents in the treatment process.
