A strategy for music therapy research

Abstract: This work was completed as an inaugral dissertation within the faculty of medicine at the University of Witten Herdecke. The work covers the theoretical and practical development of a research strategy for a music therapy department. Music therapy literature as published in the medical journals is reviewed for the years 1983-1990. From this literature base, and that of experience within the department, specific research proposals are made. These include a rating scale for adult music therapy, research designs for patients with dementia, movement disturbance, the dying and changed bodily perception. In addition, there is a specific proposal for working with children. While there is a substantial amount of music therapy research available, there are few instruments for comparing work between groups. It is important that we develop at least a European forum for research co-operation.
