Music therapy as an aid for learning-disabled children |
Abstract: This M.A. thesis begins with a discussion of the theoretical background of learning disabilities and a review of the history and components of music and musical improvisation. This survey comprises a kind of database, which provided information and assistance for the treatment of two cases described in the thesis. Both children, who were diagnosed as learning disabled, demonstrated common behaviour disturbances coupled with low self esteem, even though etiological sources differed. Through music therapy, it was possible to establish close bonds with the patients, define their problems and ennable them to discover solutions to these problems. Through music, an atmosphere of mutual trust was created, wherein positive self images could be reinforced and academic and social progress could be encouraged. The author felt that therapy was productive and that some of its goals had been realized.
