1991; 4/9: 271-276.
Abstract: X-ray pictures demonstrate only the late stage of osteoporosis including demineralization rates of more than 30-50%. Bone density measurements should be performed in high turnover spongious skeletal sites. Local influences lead to misinterpretations. Newer technical developments of Dual energy absorptiometry (DXA) give more precice an accurate results e. g. in lateral spine measurements. Quantitative computertomography seems to be the best available method. Relationship of values to age and sex matched normals and to fracture risk threshold is needed for interpretation of measurements.
