Pimpinella saxifraga and Pinipinella major

Abstract: The roots of the Middle-European Pimpinella species Pimpinella saxifraga and Pimpinella major supply the medicinal drug Pimpinellae radix. Preparations of the drug are used as expectorans rnostly. Pharmaceutical important compound groups of the roots are essential oil, coumarins, saponins and polyacetylenes. Characteristic components of the essential root oil are pseudoisoeugenyl derivatives and trinorsesquiterpenoids.Since the drug is gathered preponderantly from wild growing plants, on the market often adulterated drug material is found, especially the roots of Heracleum sphondylium and Pastinaca sativa. Moreover the roots of Pimpinella peregrina were observed frequently. The admission of Pimpinella peregrina as a further plant which yields the drug Pimpinellae radix is discussed.
