Abstract: A report on three different series of experiments (1987, 1988, 1989) on the effect of acupuncture as a prophylactic and preventive measure for anaphylactic shock in rabbits. The animals were initially sensitised with albumin (5mg) and Freund's adjuvant (0,25ml) for the period of one week so that the shock experiment could be carrried ot after three to five weeks. On the day of the experiment, the animals were narcotised and catheterized for blood sampling. Zones for the heart and lung in the region of the ear were stimulated for one minute with a 10mW GaAs laser beam. The frequencies were 10,48 or 81 hertz for the three experimental groups. A state of shock was initiated by means of 25 mg albumin and the laser stimulation was subsequently repeated. The results were measured by: 1. the histamine level using the automatic fluorimetric technique according to Ruff et al at time intervals of T0, T3, T6 and possibly T10. 2. The period of survival, also for the control group. The second series of experiments (1988) were similar to the first. The frequencies of the laser were 48 and 81 hertz respectively. Furthermore, the points GV 4 and GV 26 as welll as P 6 (bilateral) were stimulated electrically two minutes prior to, as well as during and two minutes prior to, as well as during and after the shock. The frequency was 50 hertz. The criteria for the results were the same as for the prvious experiments. (Details are given.) Basically the same methods were used for the third series of experiments (1989). The frequencies 48 and 81 hertz were used for laser stimulation of the points for the heart and lung in the ear and the above mentioned points were stimulated electrically with 50 hertz. The preliminary conclusion which may be drawn from these experiments: The effect of acupuncture may be compared with that of atropine. In comparison to the control group, the release of histamine is reducedand there is a definite increase of the period of survival. There seemed to be no effect on the changes in the lungs. Further experiments are planned in which other acupuncture points willl be tested and the choice of the frequencies in relation to the depth of anaesthesia as welll as the albumin dosage will be examined. The constant effect of acupuncture at least on some parts of anaphylactic shock could, however, be demonstrated.
