Abstract: China's long isolation from the Western world and the fact that acupuncture reached the German-speaking areas via Vietnam (which was French at the time) and France are the major reasons for the variations in the nomenl´clature and thus also for the confusion. A numeral system was developed in the West and the Chinese adopted it with some changes. There are major differences concerning the GY, B, K, TH, and St meridian. But the numerical designation of the points is rarely used in China. There, the traditional Chinese names are used almost exclusively. This traditional nomenclature frequently includes information on the indications, location and importance of each individual point. Thus, in order to understand the Chinese lierature and to study acupuncture in China, the names of at least some of the points should be familiar and one should use a point-name index. Originally every cultural-language group who sought to put its language into writing developed its own symbols. This was vary confusing. Then larger groups with common language origins adopted similar forms of symbols. The Chinese language is completely different to the European languages: it is a syllable language and the written form is derived from picture-like symbols. Hanyu-Pinyin which is used nowadays, is a transcription developed in China. The pronounciation of these symbols is the major problem for the learner. Another difficulty is the fact that there are 4-5 different intonation patterns for each syllable, each pattern giving the syllable a different meaning. In other words, a single syllable can have up to five different meanings, whereby even if a syllable is spoken in one specific way, this does not always ensure that the meaning is clear. This paper explains the pronounciation of Hanyu-Pinyin and the meanings of several of the more frequently used syllables. It is very difficult for the non-Chinese speaker to memorize more than a few yoncepts so that the excellent numeral system developed in Europe is absolutely necessary. It is of major importance, that this numeral system be standardized in the near future so that the study of acupuncture becomes less confusing.
