Abstract: Plants of the rose family (Rosaceae) have long been known to us as ornamental and cultivated plants including as they do many of our much appreciated fruit varieties, among them apples, pears, plums, cherries, strawberries and quinces. Crataegus (hawthorn) and Potentilla tormentilla (tormentilla rhizomes) are important medicinal plants, the former providing a valuable cardiovascular remedy and the latter producing tannin. Some members of the rose family have been used for a long time in folk medicine, such as the lady's mantle (Alchemilla). Others, as for example meadowsweet (Filipendula), bitter almond (Prunus amygdalus) and cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) have been successfully employed in homoeopathy. lt should, however, not be forgotten that even the fruits themselves have medicinal properties and that syrup made from plums, morello cherries, blackberries and raspberries is used as a taste corrigent. The leaves of the dog rose (Rosa canina) provide a wholesome and refreshing tea while its vitamin-rich fruits make a nourishing food supplement.
