Stimulierung der natürlichen Tumorresistenz durch die Lektinoptimierung eines in der Klinik angewandten Mistelextraktes (Iscador)

Abstract: The natural resistance of immune system consists of a variety of different with each other closely cooperating MHC unrestricted cells which following an appropriate and sufficient activation are able to attack a great number of tumor cells. Beta-galactoside-specific lectin given in clinically applied mistletoe extract (Iscador) can stimulate these natural defense mechanisms which is mediated by lectin-augmented secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 and interleukin-6. For an immunological optimized application of mistletoe extract, it is necessary to determine its biological active (carbohydrate-binding) content of lectin and at the application of its most effective immunomodulatory doses (in a range of Ing/kg), the immune regulation must be taken also into consideration. Mistletoe extracts (Iscador) given in an optimized dosage schedule were able to induce antitumor activity in a group of patients with tumor in advanced stages of disease.
