Abstract: About a third of the German population are smokers - mainly cigarette smokers. After a strong increase in the 1950s and 1960s, the average annual consumption today is about 1900 cigarettes per head for all German citizens -for the West Germans a few more, for the East Germans a few less. Other tobacco products, like cigars, small cigars, fine cut tobacco, and pipe tobacco have gradually lost importance during the last decades. Every year there are at least 90,000 deaths due to tobacco consumption in Germany. Two different trends are noticeable: firstly there has been an increase in the average daily cigarette consumption for each smoker from 14 cigarettes in the 1960s to 22 cigarettes today (men, between the ages of 40 to 64) and of 10 in the 1960s to 16 today with women of the same age group; secondly there will soon be as many women smokers as men - at the moment it is 44 percent of the men and 25 percent of the women who smoke, but with youths and younger adults the percentages are almost level.
