Abstract: In a prospective, clinically controlled investigation at 41 in-patients with musculo-skeletal pains in connection with an osteoarthrosis of at least two major joints and/or one segment of the vertebral column the analgetic efficacy of a series of 8 sulphur-mud baths (Leukona°-Sulfomoor-Bad) was tested as compared to water baths with respective odour of sulphur in the bath-room. The evaluation of the pain by the patients themselves in the course of the series of baths by means of a 100 mm long horizontal visual analogical scale (VAS) (algesia score) and derived therefrom as difference of the VAS values before, during and after the end of the treatment the analgesia (analgesia score) were chosen as criteria in this test. In addition thereto a manual-therapeutic score of points orientated at the Ritchie scale that is usual in rheumatology was recorded and evaluated for 8 bilaterally selected muscular maximum points prior to and after the treatment. The findings made in a standardized way under conditions relevant to the medical practice demonstrate that the treatment with the sulphur-mud baths is clinically significant and statistically significantly superior (p <0.002 for the analgesia score and p<0.001 for the point score, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test). The maximum analgetic efficacy that can be achieved under the conditions of the test only appears in course of the serial treatment and considering the group it fully shows with the 8th bath.
