Possibilities of Osteoporosis Prevention from Pathophysiological Points of View |
Journal/Book: Natur- und Ganzheitsmedizin Wissenschaft und Praxis. 1991; 4/9: 266-270.
Abstract: The stability of the skeleton is determined by static and dynamic factors. Bone mass and structure feature amongst the static factors. The metaplastic dynamics of the bones, the rate of apposition, and the rate of resorption are therapeutically and preventively influenceable. With the normal adult osteoplasts and osteoclasts are interconnected with a feedback loop. With age or under certain pathological conditions this feedback mechanism develops defects - the amount of bone mass resorbed is bigger than that built up. Lack of estrogen, hypocalcia, lack of vitamin D, hypokinesia, and aging accelerate this process. Prostaglandins and extension caused by activity stimulate osteoblast activity. According to recent studies the osteocalcine production decreases with old age. In vitro the osteoblasts show a considerably reduced response to vitamin D.
