Abstract: The objective of this prospective study was the investigation of the iron household in infants up to one year of age fed an lacto-ovo-vegetal basis (n = 13) and in a control group (n = 14) fed with mixed, meat-containing semi-solid or solid food in addition to breast-feeding or bottle-feeding. The determination of the red blood counts, iron, transferrin and ferritin was performed in the maternal blood at the time of parturition, blood from the umbilical and venous blood of the child during the age from four through twelve months. In total, comparable results were obtained in both groups. These showed that up to this age a lacto-ovo-vegetal is also possible without the development of any iron deficiency. Individual examples of children from both groups showing at the end of the study a state of iron supply at the edge of normal as well as infants who were eliminated because of the criteria of the study (e.g. in case of therapeutical administration of iron) demonstrate the problems of sufficient supply with iron in this age.
