Abstract: Already from the time of antiquity symptoms of poisoning after eating an andromedotoxincontaining honey from the flowers of special Rhododendron species of the Turkish Black Sea region are known. Even today in Turkey such poisonings with this so-called poison and deadly honey, by the Turks called ”del bali”, are not seldom. There are likewise reports an such intoxications from regions with a dominance of other Ericaceae species in Japan, Brazil, British Columbia and even Scotland. The responsible plant constituent is the andromedotoxin which chemically belongs to the class of the diterpenes. Both the toxicological, pharmacological and therapeutical effects of the andromedotoxin are described. However, special attention is paid to the symptomatology of the poisoning with honey contaminated with andromedotoxin and as observed in man as well as to the therapeutical countervailing measures. Important is the increasing incidence of such intoxications with andromedotoxin-containing honey through the world-wide tourism and expecially through the possible import of this honey from Turkey. Therefore, centres for intoxications, hospitals and practitioners as well as food control authorities should be informed about such possibilities of poisonings with honey from Rhododendron species and other Ericaceae species.
