Heilpflanzen zur unspezifischen Abwehrsteigerung(Phyto-Immunstimulation)

Journal/Book: Ärztezeitschrift für Naturheilverfahren. 1991; 32/10: 813-818.

Abstract: The use of officinal herbs for increasing the resistance of the body to the various diseases as well as for prevention of diseases is an old medical principle, above all in biological medicine. Modern research in immuno-pathology has resulted in an explanation for this effect. It has been revealed as an immuno-stimulation in which the lymphatic system with the T-lymphocytes and the B-lymphocytes is involved. This provided a new basis for understanding the experiences made till now and for objectivating the results. For increasing the resistance of the body and not as diaphoretic, as formerly presumed, tea prepared of the blossoms of the limetree and of the elder are used as internal remedy. An explanation has also been found for the good effect of the facial vapour-bath using camomile which was already always known and which has mostly been used to suppress colds in the head and influenza-colds. Mistletoe preparations for parenteral application as Plenosol°, Iscador° and Helixor° likewise exhibit a symptomatic effect in case of chronic diseases as well as cancer diseases and that by means of immuno-stimulation. Recent research especially concerns Echinacin, a juice pressed from the fresh plant of Echinacea purpurea. The immunostimulating effect shows in an increase of the Interferon values in the body. Application of Echinacin is both parenteral and oral and in case of wounds and torpid ulcerations it also can be used locally. The use of officinal herbs for increasing the resistance of the body has got a new aspect and their use for therapeutic purposes has also been stimulated through the research an the immuno-pathology.
