Affecting attitudes: Music therapy in addictions treatment |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1990; 8: 67-71.
Abstract: Describes how music therapy experiences can be used to (1) address specific goals and tasks of addiction treatment groups in the context of the disease model of addictions and (2) support recovery by working with affective processes underlying dysfunctional attitudes. Addictive thinking and rigid defenses characteristic of the disease are impacted by the creative experience. Music therapists can use the socializing influence of music, imprinting of social messages reflected in the music, and deeply personal associations to the individual to educate clients about the disease and promote relationship to a group. The creative process can help the individual access inner blocks to change and develop the skills needed to construct a recovering life. ABSTRACT 2: According to the disease model, addictions treatment focuses on the disease as the primary problem that generates characteristic attitudes and behavior causing problems in living. The process of recovery involves on-going connections to support groups, and lifestyle changes which are challenged by the persistence of addictive attitudes. This paper will describe how music therapy experiences can be utilized to address specific goals and tasks of addiction treatment groups and support recovery by working with affective process underlying dysfunctional attitudes.
