Abstract: Discusses the semiotics of hospital room configurations as clinical clues to the evolution of psychopathologies (except psychoses) of long-term psychiatric patients. The successive appearance in patient's room of personal belongings, intermediate objects, photographs, radios, cassettes, or objects crafted by the patients in art therapy workshops signals to the therapist the patients' thoughts, plans, and desires. Personal objects dispel the anonimity of a hospital room, reassure the patient, and indicate whether the patient is evolving in the direction of getting ready to leave or is stagnating in the resigned expectation of a long-term hospitalization. Patients' objects have the ambivalent meaning of scar-objects (scars of psychic wounds) or deposit-objects to be redeemed on discharge. Four clinical examples illustrate this theme.
