My experience of music therapy in Korea
Abstract: The thesis begins with an introduction to the Korean people, their society, and their culture which is related to their attitudes toward, and some specific types of, mental illness. The history of treatments used for mental illness and the training of staff are described in addition to the prevalence of mental illness, treatment facilities, and insurance coverage of illness. The author discusses Korean music and its importance for individuals and the culture, the traditional therapeutic uses of music and recent events in music therapy Korea. A detailed account is given of the author's experience in leading a music therapy group in a Korean psychiatric facility. Finally, the author addresses the future of music therapy in Korea - both the potential and the problems.
