The use of transitional space within an expressive therapy relationship

Journal/Book: Pratt Institute Creative Arts Therapy Review. 1990; 11: 63-71.

Abstract: Discusses depth-oriented creative arts therapy in which patients and therapists recreate some ingredients of the early mother/child symbiosis. The therapist accepts the role of "bad mother" to help the patient integrate the "good" and "bad mother" within. In working out the destructive symbiosis, psychotics no longer need delusion as a defense and as a way to maintain autonomy. The playful space that is created between patients and therapists facilitates patients' transition into reality.
