Ethical precautions in music therapy research

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1990; 8: 76-79.

Abstract: 256 experimental and descriptive articles from the Journal of Music Therapy involving human Ss were examined for their degree of reported concern for ethical precautions. Less than 25% of the published research contained information relevant to ethical considerations of Ss, and 4% used procedures that could possibly be considered injurious or deceptive. It is suggested that underreporting of ethical safeguards may be attributable to lack of familiarity with the ethical standards, lack of training in research ethics, and ineffective editorial policy. ABSTRACT 2: Two hundred fifty-six experimental and descriptive articles from the Journal of Music Therapy involving human subjects were examined for their degree of reported concern for ethical precautions. Nine areas of ethical concern were investigated. Results indicated that less than 25% of the published research contained information relevant to ethical consideration of subjects, and 4% utilized procedures that could possible be considered injurious or deceptive. It was concluded that the underreporting of ethical safeguards may be attributable to lack of familiarity with the ethical standards, lack of training in research ethics, and ineffective editorial policy.
