Dynamic implications of opera training in psychotherapy |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1990; 17: 19-28.
Abstract: Considers the implications of some dynamic similarities between professional vocal artists and psychotherapists and addresses the unconscious or conscious use of operatic skills in psychotherapy. Awareness of opera dynamics allows for early detection of transference-countertransference issues. Specific sources of transference reactions in singers are (1) transference to vocal teachers, (2) transference to their favorite music and roles, and (3) musical transferences to the therapist.
