The need for supervision to manage behavior in the elderly care home resident and the implications for music therapy practice |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1990; 8: 72-75.
Abstract: Assessed the need for supervision to manage behavior in 70 elderly care home residents (aged 59-99 yrs) and determined if this need differed across activities/settings, gender, age, mild dementia diagnosis, duration of institutionalization, and care home location. Need for supervision was rated by the nursing supervisor and the activity director in each of the 6 care homes. Results reveal no differences among ratings for age and gender but some indication that Ss with longer stays had less need for structured supervision than those with shorter stays. More supervision was needed for Ss with mild dementia. Discrepancies noted in nurse supervisors' and activity directors' ratings indicate that need for supervised structure varied according to context. Implications are discussed for music therapy practice with elderly persons. ABSTRACT 2: The purpose of this article is to assess the need for supervised structure to manage behavior in elderly care home residents; to determine if the need differs across activities/settings and across gender, age, mild dementia diagnosis, duration of institutionalization, and care home location; and to draw implications for music therapy practice. Structure need ratings were made by nursing supervisors and activity directors for 70 care home residents across five activities/settings including meal time, unsructured leisure time, structured group activities, bed time, and activities for daily living. Results indicated no differences among ratings for age and gender while there was some indication that persons with longer stays had less need for structured supervision. Those who had a diagnosis of mild dementia had more need for supervision than those who did not. In addition, nursing supervisors and activity directors differed significantly in their ratings.
