Abstract: In the occidental medicine, disease and pathomorphological modifications are synonyms. The acupuncture enlarges this concept: Disease is considered as being a symptom picture consisting of the patient's symptoms and the perseptible physical and mental modifications. This concept of the disease is based on the idea that the organism consists of a multitude of components which correlate with each other. Their equilibrium stands for health. Different symptoms can be allocated to the functional zones of the acupuncture. The importance of each functional zone is described and discussed. Thus, symptoms which seem to be insignificant may represent partial aspects of an irritated functional zone for a person practising acupuncture and have a great importance for the diagnosis and the therapy.
