Psycho-Onkologie im geriatrischen Bereich

Abstract: There are many psychooncological studies to point out correlations between the development and the prognosis of cancer and psychological variables in younger cancer-patient. This paper describes first results of two studies in geriatric cancer-pa-tients. As we found out, the same effects as in younger patients can be seen in this group of patients, There is a higher rate of social losses in the life of geriatric cancer-patients and they react by becoming more depressed than a control-group of patients suffering from other diseases. Furthermore, the subjective cause of the illness is attributed as being more external, fatalistic and u controllable. So these patients react by a lower rate of active coping-strategies. From this point of view, there is a necessity for psychotherapeutic treatment in older cancer-patients too.
