Abstract: Medicinal plants have always played an important role in the life of mankind. In a historical survey it is shown that phytotherapy was practised even by physicians of ancient times and in medicine of the Middle Ages, Much of the knowledge obtained at that time has gained recognition in modern science. Research on the milk thistle (Silybum marianum) presents an interesting example of this, In addition to the medicinal plants which have been well-known for a long time, there are those which are relatively "new", such as the horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and the purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). The horse-chestnut was appreciated over many years solely as a tree for planting in parks. Nowadays, valuable medicines are obtained from its seeds. The purple coneflower, however, was known long ago to tribes of North American Indians in their folk medicine. In Europe it belongs to the more recently recognized and very effective medicinal plants. Nature offers us in her plant kingdom considerable possibilities to ensure safe and successful treatment of numerous diseases.
